Tests show a dolphin found stranded off a Long Island park may have died from a parasite that caused brain lesions.
The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation says the dolphin was found Saturday in East Rockaway. It received veterinary treatment, but couldn’t be saved. Witnesses said it had beached itself on sand and rocks before it became stranded in a marsh.
Rescue program director Kim Durham said that the dolphin had been sick for some time. She says it also had an old scar on its tail that apparently was caused by a shark bite.
